Construction is expected to start in April after Central Saanich council awarded a contract for a Brentwood Bay sanitary sewer project to Hazelwood Construction Ltd.

According to the district, the system has reached the end of its life cycle and handles around half of the municipality’s wastewater.

“I commend staff for working on this very large project,” Mayor Ryan Windsor said. “This is many years in the making. We’re glad to see it moving forward. It’s essential work.”

The tender was issued for the supply of labour, materials and equipment for a pipe replacement at the existing sanitary sewer on Wallace Drive, Sluggett Road, Tickner Road and Stelly’s Cross Road as well as bike lane installation on Wallace Drive and culvert replacement at various sites.

Hazelwood Construction’s $8,831,631 bid was the lowest of five bids.

The other bids were $9,453,025 from Copcan Civil, $10,427,477 from Don Mann Excavating Ltd., $11,099,688 from BD Hall Constructors $11,099,688 and $11,830,500 from Jacob Bros Construction.

The pump station component of the project will be tendered in March or April once the construction schedule is confirmed.

The total budget for the sewer project and bike lane is $12.9 million.

The project is being funded through capital reserves and development cost charges, the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program and long-term debt.
