The senior boys high school rugby season got started with a couple of exhibition games before spring break.

The Stelly’s Stingers took on Reynolds Rogues in their second exhibition match of the season. Stelly’s was outmanned by the Rogues and lost 25-0.

“This is a learning time for the guys,” said community coach Mua’Vae Va’a. “The majority of the team are new players.” The Stelly’s team also includes three German exchange students, he said.

“Our goal is to win one game at a time,” said Va’a.

The afternoon of rugby also included an exhibition match between the Claremont Spartans and Belmont RFC also at Stelly’s which had the driest field in the region.

The rugby season officially kicks off March 29. This year the senior league features eight local teams: Claremont, Stelly’s, Reynolds, Vic High, Esquimalt, Glen Lyon Norfolk, Oak Bay, and St. Michaels. Teams will play a round robin regular season starting after spring break.
