Crowds were noisy as they cheered on their favourite team at the annual Matt Underwood Lacrosse Tournament.

“It’s been good, pretty good,” said Kiernan Limming, co-president of the Peninsula Minor Lacrosse Association. “It’s a good tournament, I played in it when I was a Midget. It’s all for a good cause.”

The Matt Underwood Tournament supports the BC Cancer Foundation with a head shaving event taking centre stage during the event.

Seventeen teams from around the province participated in the 13th annual tournament which is held in memory of Peninsula lacrosse player Matt Underwood, who rose to play at the national level before succumbing to leukemia.

Along with helping run the association with his mother Linda Cretney, Limming coaches the Peninsula Midget B team which is in a re-building year. “We have a lot of new players — six or seven who have never played before — so it can be challenging for the few that have been playing quite a while.”

Limming continues to play the sport as well. He earned a lacrosse scholarship to Mars Hill College in North Carolina.

A Claremont graduate, Limming said lacrosse opened a lot of doors for him. “It definitely broadened my horizons,” he said. Travel with his lacrosse teams opened his eyes to the opportunities available. “Tournaments and provincials are a good way to get to know other teams and players — you get to meet a lot of people and see what life is like in other places,” he said.
