A Victoria man who died Saturday during a recreational scuba dive in Saanich Inlet has been identified as Richard Boileau, 47.

Investigation into the exact cause of Boileau's death was still being done by coroner Larry Crawford at press time, explained coroner Barbara McLintock of the B.C. Coroner's Service.

Boileau — a member of the Canadian Navy based in Esquimalt — was diving with two friends at about 130 feet when problems arose at around 3 p.m., and Shawnigan Lake's RCMP detachment was called, she said.

"His companions noticed he was in distress. They came to the surface where their dive boat was, and resuscitation was tried."

The dive boat headed to the Brentwood Bay Marina where Boileau was pronounced dead, said McLintock.

The accident also involved police on the inlet's Saanich side.

Cpl. Darren Lagan of the RCMP said foul play was not suspected in the tragedy.
