Sooke firefighters contain fire at Hope Centre

Emergency services responded to a commercial structure fire at the Hope Centre at 6750 West Coast Rd. in Sooke on Tuesday morning.

A 911 caller who observed smoke emanating from the fourth floor of the building at about 7 a.m. reported the incident.

Upon Sooke Fire Rescue’s arrival, staff at The Hope Centre’s quick response helped ensure the safety of residents. Evacuation of the building continued under fire services while additional crews responded to the cause, a kitchen fire.

One person on scene was assessed by B.C. Ambulance Paramedics for smoke inhalation. There were no other reported injuries to residents, staff or first responders.

The Hope Centre is used for supportive housing and homeless shelter.
