Some of the most notorious intersections on the Saanich Peninsula saw more crashes last year than in 2021.

ICBC has released its 2022 crash data, highlighting the worst intersections on Vancouver Island.

Looking at the Saanich Peninsula, the worst intersection was in Sidney. The Pat Bay Highway and Beacon Avenue intersection (including ramps and the Lochside Trail crossing) saw the most crashes in 2022 with 40. That’s up from 27 in 2021.

The data does not include crashes in parking lots or ones that involved parked vehicles.

The next three worst intersections were also along the highway, this time in Central Saanich.

The Mt. Newton Road intersection saw 30 crashes (up one), while the Island View Road intersection saw 17 (down from 19) and the Keating Cross Road intersection saw 12 (up from 10).

Rounding out the top five list was an intersection not on the highway. Beacon Avenue and Seventh Street saw 10 crashes in Sidney, up from seven in 2021.

The worst intersection in North Saanich was the McTavish overpass (including on and off ramps), which saw nine crashes (up from five in 2021).

Two other Pat Bay Highway intersections, both in Saanich, made the Island’s list of the top five worst intersections.

The Pat Bay Highway, McKenzie Avenue, Douglas Street intersection was second on the list with 60 crashes in 2022, up 20 from the previous year. Coming in fifth was the Highway 17 intersection at Sayward Road, which saw 57 crashes, up 24 from the previous year.

The worst intersection on the Island was in Nanaimo at Old Island Highway, Aulds Road and Hammond Bay Road, which saw 61 crashes (down 13 from 2021).
