Sidney councillor Kenny Podmore might occasionally use one of the poop pickup bags offered in the Beacon Park dispenser when he’s out with his coworker Sidney Pier Hotel dog Dave.

Hopefully, dog owners will spend the summer picking up poop in Sidney.

“We have an obligation to protect our residents and especially children from this kind of stuff,” said councillor Kenny Podmore of poop in the parks.

As of a week ago, the Town of Sidney will supply the bags to pick up doggy doo for those taking their four-legged pal into parks in the hopes of keeping soles and walkways clean.

Podmore’s been on the dog waste case since he started on council nearly three years ago.

“There is pet things that I wanted to see done and obviously things don’t happen overnight, but we are a dog-friendly town, and we had nothing,” Podmore explained. “We’ve got two now and hopefully we’ll be having more … Some people have yet to find them, when I see people with dogs I let them know it’s there.”

Two dispensers offer biodegradable bags for forgetful owners along pathways in Beacon and Eastview parks.

“If they’re successful I’m hoping we’ll take them that little bit further into Tulista Park,” Podmore said. “They are being used. I’ve seen them being used … Even the most responsible dog handler can forget the bag.”
