Count your cash carefully

Fraudster hits garage sale

Three halves that add up to nothing for a Sidney woman after being bilked at a garage sale.

Dee Bois has three halved five-dollar bills that are worthless.

When a patron came by her garage sale last weekend, the Sidney woman was slightly surprised he didn’t even dicker on the $15 price tag for a quilt set. He handed her what appeared to be three fives, which she tucked into her pocket.

Later while counting the money, she discovered the fraud. The destroyed cash is from three different bills, making them worthless.

“I’m heartbroken that people could do this,” Bois said. “It’s not even about the $15.”

With the warmer weather upon us, residents, non-profit groups and churches will begin the season of outdoor sales to fundraise or supplement income.

“I think people should be aware that this is a possibility,” Bois said.
