Federal funding will pave over some of the bumps in the road to building a roundabout near the new Amazon facility.

The majority of costs to build the roundabout at the intersection of Beacon Avenue West and Galaran Road with a connection to Stirling Way will be offset by a $5-million grant from a federal government community-building fund.

The Town of Sidney applied for the grant on behalf of all three project partners – Sidney, North Saanich and Victoria Airport Authority (VAA). It will reduce the amount each partner will have to invest in the project, based on the cost-sharing agreement finalized in December 2022.

When that agreement was finalized, the project was estimated to cost $6.4 million, including contingency, with Sidney and VAA each paying 41.4 per cent and North Saanich contributing 17.2 per cent.

Tender submissions to build the roundabout are being reviewed and evaluated with the contract to be awarded by Sidney council at an upcoming meeting.

The project is estimated to be completed in late 2023.
