If you could renovate your home, what would do? A modern, open kitchen? More space for the kids? Or maybe updates that will let you easily age in place?

If any of these pique your interest, you’re not alone. In fact, these were all among the top 5 renovations Greater Victoria homeowners sought in 2023, says Robbyn McDonald, with MAC Renovations.

As we wrap up a year of renovations, here’s a look at what captured people’s imaginations in 2023 – and what might inspire you for the possibilities for your home in the year ahead!

  1. Basement suites for families – The traditional ‘inlaw suite’ is getting a rebrand with families looking for new opportunities for multi-generational living, whether it’s grandparents looking for turnkey living near the grandkids, a young adult enjoying early independence or a young couple starting out. “Bringing multiple generations into the home lets families share more time together and know their family members are safe, while also maintaining their privacy,” McDonald says.

  • Open concept kitchen – Open-concept kitchen renovations offer more than space to flex your cooking muscles over quartz counters and stainless steel appliances; they’re also about maintaining connections. Where generations past wanted the kitchen hidden from the living area, today, we want to see what the kids are doing in the family room or to chat with guests while prepping dinner. Ultimately, it’s about building connections from the heart of the home: the kitchen.
  • Moving to Victoria to retire – Locals know Victoria is the place to be, and so do retirees from the rest of Canada! So when you’ve found your ideal destination, all that’s left is finding – or creating – the ideal home that will let you enjoy your well-earned retirement for many years to come. The good news, McDonald says, is that if you’re still tidying up matters in your current city, MAC’s use of technology, established processes and experienced teams make it easy to undertake renovations remotely.
  • Extra bathrooms for a growing family – Whether it’s accommodating bath time or busy schedules, there quickly comes a point that a single bathroom no longer works for many families. The good news is that the solutions are as varied as the homes and families who seek them, from a spa-inspired ensuite to a full four-piece bath to a simple powder rooms with guests in mind.
  • Basement reno for growing family – Space is often the common denominator in many renovations, especially space that can transition as we need it to. For growing families, the basement can often be the most effective way to find more space, whether it’s a playroom for younger kids or a gaming or media room for teens. Or, if the play space is upstairs, maybe the basement is the ideal location for a home office or hybrid work space for mom or dad, McDonald suggests.
