A segment of Beach Drive known for both speeding drivers and police enforcement snagged another speeder.
Oak Bay officers watching speeds on Beach Drive near Newport Avenue stopped a driver on Jan. 15 around 8:30 p.m. after clocking him travelling 87 km/h in the 40 zone, the department said in its weekly news briefs.
The 25-year-old man driving was issued a ticket for excessive speed ($368 fine), no insurance ($598 fine) and the vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days.
Police enforcement isn’t new in the area, with Chief Constable Mark Fisher noting an uptick in excessive speed stops in fall 2023.

“As it continues to be an issue, we continue to do enforcement,” Fisher told the Oak Bay News at the time. “It is a significant cause for concern for residents and us, given the stopping distances involved and how far they are over the speed limit.”
Drivers going more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit face a $368 ticket, three penalty points on their driving record, which impacts insurance costs and a mandatory seven-day vehicle impound where fees also accrue.
Early morning break-in
Oak Bay police called in Saanich forensics after a business break-in on The Avenue early Friday morning.
Police were called to the 2100 block of Oak Bay Ave. on Jan. 19 around 5:30 a.m. where it appears a break and enter was interrupted and nothing was reported stolen.
