Police on the Saanich Peninsula arrested two men, in two different standoff incidents Sunday, June 4.

The first occurred at around 5:30 a.m. Sidney North Saanich RCMP Staff Sergeant Wayne Conley says police received a call from a woman inside a home at the Pauquachin First Nation, stating that there was an argument going on that had escalated. She was able to get safely out of the home and responding officers cordoned off the around around the house.

Contact was made with a man still in the house, who Conley said had an edged weapon with him. He would not elaborate on the type of weapon.

After around two hours, officers were able to convince the man to come out and he was taken to hospital for an assessment.

The second incident happened at around 4:15 p.m. the same day. Officers responded to a 9-1-1 call from a woman at a home in the 2000 block of Weiler Avenue West in Sidney. As officers arrived, the woman emerged from the house with minor injuries, apparently inflicted by a man with another edged weapon. Conley said the injuries were minor and the woman was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Conley said a negotiator was called in from the Sidney North Saanich detachment, who was able to get a phone into the man inside the house. The area was cordoned off for close to two hours and traffic diverted from the area.

The man was eventually convinced to come out, where he was arrested and held in custody for a court appearance Monday. Conley said the man is facing charges of uttering threats and assault with a weapon.
