Sidney’s Beacon Brewing will operate a food truck on several occasions this year, including its third anniversary in the fall.

The brewery plans to run the truck directly in front of its 9829 Third St. location on seven dates between April and the end of the year.

The food truck pitch was approved at the Feb. 12 council meeting.

“I think it’s a great idea,” Coun. Steve Duck said. “It brings more vibrancy to the town. They (Beacon Brewing) do support other brick-and-mortar establishments. This will bring more people (wanting to eat) to other restaurants as well. There will be a crowd, and they will just have to go somewhere else.”

The request was approved by a vote of 6-1.

“If there was an outcry from surrounding businesses or other food vendors that were saying ‘This is cutting into my business,’ then I would have concerns,” Coun. Terri O’Keeffe said. “Because we haven’t heard that, I feel supportive of this at this time.”

Only Coun. Chad Rintoul opposed the brewery’s request as he took issue with the number of times the food truck could operate and how that might impact other businesses.

“Two or three times a year would be fine. We’re up to seven,” Rintoul said.

”I love food trucks, and I’m partial to beer. It’s a good combination, I’m just mindful of the brick-and-mortar businesses.”

The food truck will operate on April 21, May 26, June 30, Aug. 3, Sept. 22, Oct. 19 and on New Year’s Eve, while the June and August dates could change.
