CRD Animal Care Services are investigating a pit bull attack in Saanich that left another dog with serious injuries.

On Sunday night at approximately 6:30 p.m., Saanich police responded to a reported dog attack at Reynolds Park between an off-leash pit bull and a leashed greyhound.

Saanich Police Department told Black Press Media that officers remained on scene to talk to witnesses and ensure everyone was safe. They identified the dog and its owner and then contacted CRD Animal Control Services, who are now handling the investigation.

As of Tuesday morning, the CRD told Black Press Media the injured dog was still in care and is in “serious shape,” adding there is a 50/50 chance of its survival.

Andy Orr, senior manager of communications with the CRD, confirmed the pit bull escaped from a neighbouring yard and likely slipped under the fence.

He said the ongoing investigation will likely lead to a dangerous dog declaration.

Under this Saanich bylaw, the dog owner must take action to ensure the dog remains securely confined either indoors or in an enclosed pen on the owner’s property, and held on a non-extendable leash by a person competent to restrain the dog while outdoors.

Orr added the investigation “might lead to other things,” but said he could not disclose any more information at this time.
