A man faces assault with a weapon charges after police say he threw rocks at an officer and broke the windshield on a police vehicle.

Oak Bay police say the man was a suspect in a call about someone throwing rocks at windows in the 2000-block of Cadboro Bay Road on March 11 just after 10:30 p.m.

When officers told the man he was under arrest he threw a rock at the police car.

The officer ducked, and a subsequent rock hit a police car, the department said in its weekly news release.

Faced with a Taser, the man surrendered and was arrested for mischief, assaulting a police officer and assault with a weapon. The 41-year-old man was held in custody and appeared in court the next morning. He was released with conditions and a court date. The total estimated damages are $4,000.

It was among the 68 calls to Oak Bay police the week of March 11 to 17.

Police were called around 11:30 a.m. for the two-vehicle collision near Central Avenue and Byng Street. The driver was ticketed for backing up when it was unsafe ($109) and failing to show a driver’s licence ($81). Police later located the owner of the parked vehicle.

Drifting driver stopped

Police on patrol on Cedar Hill Cross Road on March 17 saw a driver drifting within its lane then signalling a left turn, where there was no road.

The driver was stopped around 3 a.m. and a roadside screening showed a “warn.” The driver was issued a three-day driving prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for three days.
