Victorians are invited to “Parc it” this month and check out one of the city’s newest home furnishings stores.

David and Jody Adelman opened Parc Modern furniture last November, in what many will remember as the former Herald Street Caffe site. Completely renovated and refreshed, the Design District building provides the perfect backdrop for the clean-lined, contemporary furnishings and accessories.

Throughout January, Parc Modern is celebrating its grand opening with special sale prices and a break on the HST, David notes.

Boasting 30 years in the business, David, who grew up in his third-generation family furniture business in Winnipeg, wanted to open a store in Victoria targeting those needing beautiful, smaller-scale, multi-functional pieces perfect for the city’s modern condos and smaller homes. While specialists in leather furniture, Parc also features a wide variety of furnishings in fabric and leather-and-fabric combinations.

But don’t expect to find the same names you’ll find everywhere else. Current highlights include pieces by Montreal’s Normand Couture and New York’s Stanley Jay Friedman. “We’re trying to bring a little metropolitan style to Victoria,” David says with a smile.

To maximize space in those smaller homes, many popular items are those offering multi-purpose practicality in addition to stylish design, such as a coffee table with hidden storage or an elegant sofa that, with removable arm and back, can convert to a twin bed.

And rest assured that if you see a chair or sofa at Parc, it will be as comfortable as it is beautiful. Each piece has undergone the “sit test” to be sure it passes muster. “We sit in everything we buy,” says David, noting that it isn’t enough for a sofa or chair to look great; it must feel great, too.

For those needing a little guidance in pulling their living space together, Parc also offers design services, David notes. Clients are invited to enjoy a coffee and discuss their space, their design preferences and furniture needs, or just enjoy a leisurely browse to see the many possibilities. “We want to make it an inviting place to come to.” The Adelmans seem to be on the right track. “Everybody who comes in says, ‘Wow! This is just what we need,’” David says. “People are excited about the store.”
