Local arts get cash

The Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula is among those receiving funding from the BC Arts Council. The board for the BC Arts Council approved more than $32,000 in provincial grants to arts groups in Saanich North and the Islands and $40,000 in writing awards to local individuals.

The Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula will get $8,505 for core annual support to established community arts councils.

“These grants help ensure artists can continue to engage the public and tell our community’s stories through various forms of expression. I’d also like to congratulate the winners of these creative writing awards, as they demonstrate just how much artistic talent can be found locally,” said Saanich North and the Islands MLA Murray Coell.

Funding is used to support a range of progams that include media and visual arts, festivals, museums, community arts councils, touring and professional development and individual awards to creative writers.

Others awarded funding include the Salt Spring Arts Council ($13,565), Ptarmigan Music and Theatre Society ($10,000) and $10,000-awards to creative writers Brian Brett, Marion A.C. Farrant, Susan Mayse, and Ronald N. Wright.
