Stelly’s Secondary School students are returning to the stage for their first live senior musical theatre production in three years.
From June 7 to 10, students will perform Once Upon a Mattress, which is based on The Princess and the Pea.
“It’s a show we did 10 years ago,” performing arts teacher, director and choreographer Alicia Bartlett said. “It’s very comedic.”
The school has been working on the production since this past February.
“We have a large cast and crew and orchestra that have been working really hard to put the production together,” Bartlett said.
Around 70 students will be involved with Once Upon a Mattress. They will be operating the lights and sound, stage managing, performing and moving the set. Music director Norbert Ziegler is conducting the orchestra and is teaching the musical theatre class with Bartlett. Bartlett is also teaching the stagecraft class with set builder Tim Lockhart.
“The big thing that we pride ourselves on is that the show is entirely student-run once the curtains open, except for Norbert conducting the orchestra,” Bartlett added.
The last live show the group performed was Shrek in January 2020.
“The break was because of COVID-19 restrictions,” Bartlett said.
Tickets will be $15 at the door and will also be available online soon at bit.ly/3Vp8xxE.
