Bookstore brings bright guides

Local authors Phillipa Hudson and Rick Hudson will sign copies of their new booklets, A Field Guide to Alpine Flowers of the Pacific Northwest and A Field Guide to Gemstones of the Pacific Northwest, at Tanner’s Books on Saturday, May 28, from 1 to 3 p.m.

A Field Guide to Alpine Flowers of the Pacific Northwest features 112 spectacular photos of flowers found from the mid to alpine elevations on Vancouver Island and the Coast Mountains of the Pacific Northwest, from the exquisite Yellow Glacier Lily to the aptly named Showy Jacob’s Ladder. Each species is labelled with English and Latin names, descriptions of the distribution range and average plant height and flower size.

A Field Guide to Gemstones of the Pacific Northwest will help amateur rockhounds discover what lies in the rich geology here, including gemstones such as purple amethyst, jade, opal, emerald, sapphire, and other valuable stones. It also provides aids for spotting gems in the rough and contains useful facts about local gemstones that are the equal of any in the world.

Phillipa Hudson has been an enthusiastic and active amateur botanist for more than 30 years. She is also the author of A Field Guide to Coastal Flowers of the Pacific Northwest. Rick Hudson is a passionate outdoorsman and rockhound who has spent more than two decades exploring southern British Columbia. He is also the author of Gold, Gemstone & Mineral Sites of British Columbia, Volumes 1 and 2. The couple lives in North Saanich, where they enjoy hiking, bik-ing and kayaking as often as possible.
