Grandmothers don Easter bonnets for tea time

The St. Andrew’s Grandmothers Helping African Grandmothers is hosting a Spring Bonnet Tea and Fashion Show at St. Andrew’s Church Hall, 9691- Fourth Street, Sidney. The tea takes place Saturday May 7 at 2 p.m. and for a cost of $15 guests will be treated to a fashion show by Sidney Casuals and a delicious tea including sandwiches, scones and sweets.

“We want people to know that everyone is welcome, you don’t have to attend the church to join,” said Margaret Rothe, St. Andrew’s Grandmothers’ chairperson.

The group, which raises funds to benefit the Stephen Lewis Foundation, has approximately 40 members. “We’d like to get bigger so we can reach out more to the community,” said Rothe. The group holds three or four meetings a year to organize their fundraising events.

“African grandmothers are having to raise their grandchildren because they’ve lost their own children to AIDS,” said Rothe. “They are so grateful for anything that we do. And it is making a difference out there.”

Everyone is welcome to join the ladies for an afternoon of tea and entertainment, there will be prizes for the best hat and other fun events. All proceeds go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation. Call Rothe at 778-426-1810.
