The Sidney Lions Club is handing out smiles, hotdogs and beverages at its membership drive on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tulista Park.

“We are a service club that funnels funds back into our community for local needs. It seems like a catchphrase, but it really is true; more than ever our seniors, our youth, people with vision and hearing problems, and other disadvantaged need our help, and we need more members to help support existing and new endeavours we want to take on,” the club said in a press release.

Now in its 60th year, the club fundraises for local causes in Sidney and North Saanich, mainly through their food truck.

The club in partnership with BC Gaming has subsidized over 1,500 pairs of glasses from Sidney Optometrists for preschoolers, homeschoolers, and grades K-8 since 2004.

It also contributes to Cycling Without Age (Sidney), Saanich Peninsula Baseball Association, Scouts and Girl Guides of Canada, Women’s Transition House, Balfour’s Friends Foundation, hearing aids for seniors, and other local causes.

The club is also the founder of the Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank.

“Anyone who saw our Saanich Peninsula Lions Food Bank Toy Drive collection over the last couple of years knows the impact we can make in the lives of many in our community. Ask any of our members how much fun it is to be part of something bigger than yourself, part of something to help many in our community,” the press release continued.

Membership requires an annual fee, with once-a-month meetings from September to June, and helping with events scheduled throughout the year. It states it is not strict on meeting attendance.

“We are a progressive club and welcome anyone who would like to be more involved in our community. We need the fresh ideas of the youth, as well as the knowledge from the experienced,” the press release said.

“See if joining our club is just the thing you’ve been looking for to make a difference in our community. We look forward to meeting you!”
