A Westjet plane sits awaiting clearance to prepare for takeoff at Victoria International Airport. The company announced last week it is adding direct flights to Phoenix to its schedule.

Regular flights are now winging back and forth between Phoenix and Victoria.

"We're delighted to have WestJet step up and provide this service," said Geoff Dickson, president and CEO for the Victoria Airport Authority.

"Victoria's really a lot about sun-spot destinations in the winter time and this just seemed like a natural fit to us. So we went to the WestJet folks probably six months ago (to inquire about adding service)."

The company agreed and the inaugural WestJet flight took off Nov. 4. The 737 service run between Phoenix and Victoria will fly once each way on Fridays.
