With a handful of 300s and a 900-triple under her belt this season, Emily Greig is ready to take on the best in the province.
Greig, 18, bowls at Sidney’s Miracle Lanes each Saturday, and has been since Victoria’s bowling alley closed.
Whether biological or environmental — she’s been bowling for a decade now — Greig is geared toward the sport. Her aunt owns an alley in Calgary, her mom’s a skilled bowler and her uncle competed in his youth.
“If you go back generations, it’s always been in the family,” Greig said.
Greig will be among the 264 athletes and coaches set to converge on Kamloops for the 2011 Youth Bowling Canada - BC 5 Pin 4 Steps to Stardom Provincial Championships. Those who earn gold will go on to nationals.
Competing in the senior singles, she earned a bronze at provincials last year.
“The goal this year is to be consistent with the games,” she said. “I’m just staying calm and not overreacting.”
The lone senior competing from the South Island, she looks forward to connecting with her friends from Nanaimo, who make up the bulk of the Island contingent.
“Getting off the Island is nice,” Greig said with a smile. Travel is just one of the opportunities afforded her through bowling. The Spectrum grad, now a Camosun student, earned a scholarship last year.
“If you’re just looking for something to do, it’s definitely fun,” she said. “I’ve made so many friends doing this.”
