Victoria cyclist just misses World Championship podium

Track cyclist Jay Lamoureux season includes new Canadian record

A month after he helped Canadian men win a World Cup track cycling silver medal – and set a new Canadian record for three minutes, 52.420 seconds in the team pursuit (4,000 metres) – Victoria’s Jay Lamoureux nearly helped put Canada on the podium of the World Track Cycling Championships.

Last week both the Canadian men’s and women’s team pursuit foursomes finished fourth at the 2019 Track World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland. It came down to a bronze medal final against the New Zealanders for the Canadian women, and against the Danish for the Canadian men.

While both Canadian pursuit team was relegated to fourth-place finishes, it was still another big step forward as Canada moves closer to the Tokyo Olympics.

For the men’s squad of Michael Foley, Derek Gee, Adam Jamieson and Lamoureux, making the medal round was a new accomplishment. It built on their already impressive season in which the men’s team pursuit twice-cracked the Canadian record at the Milton World Cup, Oct. 26 to 28, again in Berlin (3:54.682) on Nov. 30 to Dec. 2, and then again in Cambridge, New Zealand in Jan. 18 to 20 with a time of 3:52.420 – less than three seconds short of world record.
