Saanich Braves edge Westshore Wolves

Saanich Braves now 4-1 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season

Third period goals by Josh Gray and Andrew White pushed the Saanich Braves past the Westshore Wolves 3-2 at Bear Mountain Arena on Wednesday.

The Braves visit the Nanaimo Buccaneers tonight (Sept. 27) and host the Kerry Park Islanders at Pearkes arena, 6:30 p.m. tomorrow. The Victoria Cougars host the Peninsula Panthers at Archie Browning Sports Centre tonight at 7 p.m.

Wednesday's loss cooled the Wolves, who fall to .500 for the first time with four wins and four losses, third in the South Division behind the league-leading Victoria Cougars (6-0) and the Braves (4-1)

No goals were scored in the first period with Braves goalie Tanner McGaw making 11 saves and Wolves goalie Alex Dillon making nine.

Sam McMullen opened the scoring in the second period for the Braves but the Wolves came right back with an unassisted goal from Kayle Ramsay and a goal at the game's halfway mark by Clay Carson.

Less than five minutes into the third period Wolves forward Brandon Nicholson took a hooking penalty. Gray scored on the advantage, his team leading sixth goal of the season, from Ty Jones and Shawn McBride. White scored the game-winner with four minutes, 41 seconds left.

Next up for the Wolves is a road game Saturday night (Sept. 29) against the Oceanside Generals.

Best of Jr. B:

- Cougars captain Brody Coulter leads all scorers with eight goals while linemate Sam Rice leads the league in points with 23, including a Henrik Sedin-like 20 assists.

- Trigger man Max Mois has five goals and five assists to lead the Westshore Wolves, who are doing just fine as a freshly assembled team.
