When Leonardo and Pilar Maekawa hit the ice on Monday, it was as one of the longest running pairs in the dance program for the 2011 BMO Skate Canada National Juniors.

They’re the only locals to skate in the national juniors which run until Thursday at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Siblings Leonardo, 18, and Pilar, 16, have been skating together since they were eight and six years old, respectively.

The Maekawas finished eighth in the novice dance compulsories and Leonardo finished 11th in the novice men’s short program.

Both skated again on Tuesday after the News Review’s deadline.
