Monster effort at indoor nationals

University of Victoria rowers are atop a number of categories after hosting the 26th annual Monster Erg indoor meet at McKinnon Gymnasium.

The Monster Erg allows rowers to compete simultaneously across the nation in the Canadian Indoor Rowing Championships.

Vikes rowers won: Novice Women — Ruby Walser (7:23.91); Novice Men — Samuel Johnson (6:36.70); Senior B Lightweight Women — Ingrid Baul (7:32.90); Senior A Lightweight Women — Eli Golshani (7:32.70); Senior B Lightweight Men — Marc Verkyul (6:29.30); Senior B Women — Antje von Seydlitz (7:00.70); Senior B Men — Anthony Linton (6:17.50); Senior A Men — Kai Langerfeld (6:06.60).

Basketball men on the move

The Vikes men’s basketball team improved to 15-7 with their eighth straight win on Saturday.

UVic swept the Thompson Rivers Wolf Pack, Feb. 4 and 5 in Kamloops, 78-67 and 72-70.

Ryan MacKinnon led the squad with 43 points on the weekend.

The Vikes women dropped both their games to the Wolf Pack, 53-44 and 62-59.

The women are now 15-7 for the season and tied for fourth spot in the Canada West Conference.

Both men’s and women’s teams have a bye next weekend and close the regular season with a pair of games against the University of BC Thunderbirds, Feb. 18 and 19 at UVic.

Rookie part of two records

The Vikes set three indoor track records at the University of Winnipeg’s Bison Classic track meet on Feb. 4.

Rookie Adam Gaudes was in on two of the records. Gaudes ran the men’s 300-metre race in 35.67 seconds and was part of the men’s 4x400-metre relay team’s new record of 3:21.85.

The Vikes’ women's 4x400m relay team also set a new school record of 4:03.28.
