Captain lifts Grizzlies past Kings in overtime, will face Alberni on Friday

The Victoria Grizzlies will play the Alberni Bulldogs in Round 2

Captain Zach Urban’s overtime winner has put the Victoria Grizzlies into Round 2 versus Alberni Bulldogs in the B.C. Hockey League playoffs.

Urban’s goal at 14 minutes into the first overtime ended the Powell River Kings’ season at Bear Mountain Arena on Wednesday night, 3-2 in overtime.

The Grizz and Kings were tied at two wins each going into Game 5 of the the best-off-five series.

All three of the Grizzlies goals came from defenceman. D.J. Jones scored on the powerplay in the second period to make it 1-0 for the Grizz. Tegan Waugh responded to tie it for the Kings minutes later 1-1. But Jaden Schmeisser put the Grizz ahead 2-1 before the period edned.

Kings’ forward J.P. Villeneuve scored the only goal in the third period to send it to sudden death overtime 2-2.

Grizzlies goalie Brady Rouleau stopped 29 of 31 shots for the win.

Game 1 versus the Bulldogs is Friday night at Bear Mountain Arena, 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs eliminated the Nanaimo Clippers with a 2-1 win in Game 5 of their series Wednesday night.
