Ballet brings love to White theatre

Ballet Jörgen presents Coppélia in the Charlie White Theatre.

Coppélia takes the audience into the mysterious mind of Dr. Coppélius, a lonely and disillusioned toy maker who wishes he could bring his dolls to life to find his perfect bride.

Coppélius creates Coppélia, a stunning, life-sized dancing doll. The story’s beauty and hilarity develop quickly as Nathanael — one of the local villagers — falls madly in love with the doll. His sweetheart Klara enacts revenge, and confusion and love are explored through her pretending to be Coppélia to punish Nathanael.

This comedy with love is told through the vibrant choreography of the award-winning Bengt Jörgen. Emotional and captivating, it is one of the best balletic representations of fantastical storytelling the world over.

The set is made up of large interlocking and movable three-dimensional shapes, and costumes reflect the design with geometric shapes and bright, primary colours.

Scenes change by moving and altering the formation of these cubes and the physical transformations of scene changes are integrated into the choreography, emphasizing the playful atmosphere of this artificial world.

Coppélia runs Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets ($15 to $35) are available at the box office 250-656-0275 or online at www.marywinspear.ca.
