What’s in a name?

Is the path that we all share really that narrow?

So often we see it, when someone takes the time to express their concerns and views in a letter to the editor (and therefore to all of us), we are referred to as being ‘taxpayers’. If the cost of keeping our lives moving along toward mutually harmonious ends is the only measure of our value in the scheme of things, how do we compare under these narrow terms?

Big, important taxpayer? Mid-range taxpayer? Puny, insignificant taxpayer? Struggling taxpayer? Irate taxpayer? Over-taxed taxpayer? Are we to be quantified and rated on some taxpayer scale?

When I look at my fellow travellers aboard the only earthly ride that we’ll ever have the opportunity to experience together, I see so much more than taxpayers.

There is an old saying: “It’s not what people call you that’s important … it’s what you answer to that matters.” I don’t answer to ‘taxpayer’ … it just doesn’t cover it. So please, let’s look for common denominators that reflect and respect our true worth to each other.
