Once again, the district and administration of Central Saanich has fired up the chainsaw and removed two more elegant trees in our municipality without public input.
Apparently, the Italian poplars fronting Shady Creek Cemetery were in the way of district works and services for road repair and were exempt from tree cutting permits. Interesting, that the same rationale was given when Central Saanich residents protested the removal of up to 14 trees to accommodate road widening along West Saanich Road in Brentwood Bay a couple of years ago.
On the other hand, the district recently fined a property owner $125,000 for felling 67 protected trees on his own property.
So, I guess if I want to justify cutting down a tree in Central Saanich, I just need to say it’s in the way of road repair?
