We have always been headed for rapid transit. It just doesn’t include the very inefficient E&N.
As we see with the McTavish interchange it is costly and doesn’t reduce the amount of motor vehicles on the road — it only caters to them. Whether an improved transit bus system or the addition of light rail, the barrier remains — getting people to use it.
If we are to invest in a very costly Light Rapid Transit system, we should consider changes to development where money goes to an LRT rather than parking stalls; increase surcharges that help people spontaneously use transit seeing it as an essential community infrastructure.
In short — make it too expensive to drive the car.
