Failing the poor

Re: No price tag for humanity (PNR editorial March 4).

I would like to read more comments relating to our local efforts to combat poverty and the homeless in our community. My experience has been that whenever I try to discuss local poverty with friends, the prevailing opinion appears to be that the poor are just lazy and are abusing our generous welfare system.

Unfortunately, I believe that during the past four decades, we have all failed to adequately help the poor in our community. I am saddened to learn that food banks are growing every year and a significant share of the benefactors are children.
