April 21, 1938 - September 7, 2024

In loving memory ~

Ron (Haggis) died peacefully at home after a multi-year battle with cancer. An illness he faced with amazing fortitude and grace.

Born in a Glasgow tenement during wartime 1938, his early years were tough yet formative, setting the foundation for the strength and courage he embodied his entire life. He started trucking at the age of 12. Delivering milk, later becoming the local bus driver.

At 18, he served in post-war Germany as part of the Occupational Forces driving tank and various military vehicles. In 1959, he landed a job transporting bus loads of bands to and from their concerts throughout Scotland. Intrigued by 1960's life in the music scene, he and his best friend Monty formed a security team to serve major acts performing in Glasgow. His favourite gig was with Louis Armstrong in 1962.

In 1965, it was time to bring his young family to Canada, and a new life began. With his driving background, he soon became well known as the The Haggis that helped shape the transportation industry on Vancouver Island. He owned two trucking companies and mentored in the success of many other ventures. An amazing work ethic, combined with a tremendous sense of play, he was admired and cherished by all who knew him. He excelled in pool, darts, and horseshoes but always shared the winnings!

He embraced the Island's open spaces, adopting a new life of camping, fishing, hunting, and even some hobby farming. More recently, he enjoyed travelling, puttering around the house, gardening, reading, and spending time with his friends and family.

Predeceased by his two eldest children in 2020, he lives on through his six children, their partners, numerous grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was extremely proud of them all and cherished their times together. He leaves behind his wife and best friend of 46 years, who will forever remember this remarkable man.

Please join us to celebrate Ron's life on November 17 from 2-8 in the Dogwood Room at the Saanich Fairgrounds, 1528 Stellys Cross Rd, Saanichton.
