It is with a broken heart that we report the passing of Maynard Maclennan Vollan. Maynard leaves behind his partner Joan Rosene, children Chris, Kevin (Janis), Heather (Clint) Martens, their children Odessa, Summer and Skye, Richard and Jeannette Rosene, their children Ryan (Bri), Anderson, Laura (Ryan), their grandchildren, as well as numerous close friends.
Maynard was born and raised in Edmonton, where he attended the University of Alberta. After graduating with a Masters degree in Structural Engineering, he assumed control of Vollan Construction, which he ultimately turned into Courtyard Inns, the hotel chain that he built, owned and operated in Western Canada.
In 2002, Maynard and Joan retired to Sidney, where he pursued his love of sailing, biking, and travelling. He satisfied his adventurous spirit as they travelled the world, explored the seven continents and cruised the "seven seas". Time did not deter his love of adventure, exploration and his zest for life.
But in Maynard's words, "In the end it matters not what journeys you have been on, nor the possessions you have accumulated. What matters is who you're with".
To the many family and friends who were with him to share his life's journey, we are forever grateful. We will miss him but his light, laughter, sense of humour and love will remain forever with us.
And on his final journey, we are ever so grateful to Kevin and Janis, Richard and Jeannette and their family, for their love and support, to our wonderful family doctor, Dr Robert Farmer, and Dr. Fleetwood, Dr. Joe and Dr. McGhie for the professional, kind and compassionate care and guidance given us both, the staff at the BC Cancer Agency, and the angels at the Saanich Peninsula palliative care unit.
As per Maynard's request, there will be no memorial service, and his ashes will be placed at the location that he has chosen.
"Whenever I am missing you,
I will remember how fortunate I was
to have you in my life.
I wouldn't change that for the world".
