The story of John Harold Eastwood Bailey begins on January 8, 1934 in Victoria, B.C.

John came from a long line of Norwegian boat builders, but he was a self-made man, ahead of his time. He built houses and apartment blocks across Greater Victoria, and at 35 years old retired to design and construct his dream, the Fascination.

He was a jack-of-all-trades with a million-dollar smile who wasn't afraid to speak his mind and steal the show at a costume party.

For three decades, the captain lived aboard his beautiful yacht, where he made a lifetime of memories with Louise, his first mate and wife of 64 years.

He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father of four and a passionate papa to his adoring grandchildren.

Predeceased by his sons Jim and Rick, John is survived by his sweetie Louise, sister Carolyn (Parker), son Barry and daughter Leanna (North), her husband Wayne, their children Natalie and Geoffrey and his wife Aimee.

When our Big Bad John set course for his final journey on January 11, 2018, he left behind a huge hole in the heart of our family.

A celebration of his epic life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 27 at the Capital City Yacht Club, where he is an honourary lifetime member.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital for their loving care.
