Hugh Wallace Campbell

October 31, 2012

1943 - 2012

Early on October 31, 2012, Hugh stepped into his boat and sailed off into the sunset. He was surrounded by his loving family, wife Catherine of 44 years, daughter Kirstin (Shawn), grandson Ronan and son Christopher (Sarah). Hugh retained his dry sense of humour and positive attitude throughout his illness, as he did in life. He is remembered by his mother Josephine, his siblings Virginia Parkhurst, Alan (Delma), Corinne Cole (Bill), Bruce (Eleanor), sister-in-law Linda Gokey and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is predeceased by his father Royden and brother-in-law Rod.

Hugh was born and raised in West Vancouver. He and his siblings often reminisced about the many adventures they had aboard their boat the Seaclan every summer. After teaching at Maple Ridge Secondary School for 9 years, Hugh moved with his family to Sidney in 1978. There he started his boat building business Winard Wood Ltd. where he was well known as a Master Boat Builder. Operating for many years at the property that is now know as Lillian Hoffar Park, many a customer enjoyed dropping in for a cup of tea on the ways in front of the shop. Hugh was instrumental in the early stages of setting up Quadrant Marine, a school for training new boat builders.

For many years Hugh enjoyed hobbies such as wine making and curling. An avid boater he spent his summers with Catherine and his family cruising the local islands and traveling the world. Hugh and Catherine had an enthusiastic 44-year cribbage rivalry. Granny and Poppie also enjoyed numerous trips to the aquarium and playground with their grandson. Hugh will be greatly missed by friends and family.

A celebration of life will be held at Capitol City Yacht Club, North Saanich on Saturday Nov 24th at 2-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the British Columbia Cancer Foundation, Victoria, for Pancreatic Cancer Research.
