February 26, 1929 - June 29, 2024

In loving memory ~

Anne's father built and ran the Oak Bay Beach Hotel so she grew up in and around the hotel. During WWII she was sent to Strathcona Lodge School where she made lifelong friends. At McGill, she met and married Jim (James Alfred Meredith Johnston). She obtained her MSc in Bacteriology while Jim obtained his MD and they returned to Victoria. Anne started the Microbiology Department at St Joseph's Hospital and had her eldest child, Susan, before they moved to Great Britain for Jim to continue his studies. Ian and Margot were born in Britain. After Jim's death in 1959, the family returned to Victoria where Anne was head of Microbiology at Royal Jubilee Hospital for many years. She eventually left RJH to start her business consulting with all the South Island and Saltspring Island hospitals. She retired in 2001. Anne moved to North Saanich in 1975 and became a leader in her community. She volunteered with several organizations including the Parks Commission, and chaired the Saanich School Board and the Peninsula Community Association (now Beacon Community Services). She started the first Beacon thrift store: the Peninsula Old and New and volunteered there for 25 years. In 1984 she received a Lifestyle Award from the federal government for her contributions to the health of her community. In 2002 Anne moved back to Victoria to be closer to her children and many long-term friends. Her family thanks Anne's friends in her condo building, Parkwood Court and Mount St Mary Hospital for their care of Anne during her last few years. Anne was always up for a bit of fun. She loved education, beaches, forests, music and especially, her family. Anne was predeceased by parents Marcia and William Merston, as well as siblings Pam and Jim. She will be much missed by daughters Susan and Margot, son Ian, daughters-in-law Rainey and Caroline, granddaughter Sage, great granddaughters Meryn and Ella, great-great grandson Loyal, sister-in-law Isabel, numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
