Wind gusts of 100 km/hr batter Vancouver Island as storm continues

Wind gusts could reach speeds of above 100 kilometres per hour

Heavy rains and strong winds will continue to batter B.C.’s south coast Thursday.

Environment Canada says Vancouver Island’s coastal areas could see “strong wind gusts” hit more than 100 kilometres per hour, while inland Vancouver Island will see speeds of between 60 and 80 kilometres per hour.

The whole Island will see sustained southeast winds of 60 to 80 kilometres Thursday morning before the wind directions switch to the southwest and bring speeds of 70 to 90 kilometres from the Juan de Fuca Strait to the coastal regions.

The agency warned that high winds could cause damage to roof shingles and windows, as well as tossing around loose objects and broken tree branches.

BC Ferries has cancelled multiple sailings throughout the day, including along its major routes.

The 6:15 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. ferries between Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay have been cancelled, and routes between Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen-Duke Point and Tsawwassen-Southern Gulf Islands have been cancelled till 2 p.m.
