Victoria’s bridge-lifting job includes ‘rare’ exposure to abuse

City of Victoria seeks operator for the Johnson Street bridge

A position that includes control over marine and land traffic is up for grabs in Victoria.

The city posted the job Jan. 3, and are looking for someone to operate the Johnson Street bridge.

Billed as a job with occasional ladder and stair use, ‘normal’ mental, visual and auditory effort, the application must be willing to work outside in all weather conditions on rare occasions. The job comes with occasional “work from heights” and rare “exposure to abusive people.”

The job entails raising and lowering the Johnson Street bridge according to standing orders and regulations to permit the passage of marine traffic; operate radio to contact marine traffic to schedule bridge lifts; control vehicular, rail and pedestrian traffic by operating gates, traffic lights and warning devices; turn on navigation, pier and roadway lights and replace lights as required; raise and lower bridges manually using emergency procedures and stand-by engines.

The successful applicant would: Clean and maintain machinery rooms and areas; lubricate gears, trunnions and gates; conduct operational inspection of auxiliary motors; maintain records of marine and rail traffic and bridge operations; and perform related duties where qualified.

Skills required include operating a cantilever bridge; maintain accurate records. Grade 10 education and one year of “related experience” or equivalent are required for the temporary shift position.
