A fuel line leak may have sparked a fire that tangled traffic on the Pat Bay last Friday.

A VW van burst into flames Feb. 4 on the highway near Mills Road in Sidney. The driver had disembarked a ferry, while on the boat he’d been told by ferry staff about a fuel leak. He was headed to Sidney for repairs but didn’t quite make it.

The Sidney fire department was called around 8:40 a.m.

“We had two engines and a dozen people there. It was a bit of a stubborn one to put out because of the leak in the fuel tank,” said Jim Tweedhope, deputy fire chief. “Once the fuel ran out, that was the end of the fire.”

Sidney North Saanich RCMP rerouted southbound traffic along McDonald Park Road while Sidney fire mopped up and re-opened one lane.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was destroyed.
