Transit tax hike of $28 approved for Greater Victoria

The Victoria Regional Transit Commission has approved B.C. Transit's proposed $28 per year tax increase for all homeowners to fund shortfalls in the system.

Commission members voted 6-1 at Tuesday's meeting – Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard was the lone members to vote against the motion – to approve the plan, which will take effect May 15.

The plan calls for a system-wide service reduction of 7,000 hours per year across the region. Scheduling changes take effect June 1.

Among the details in the plan is a reduction in open transfer limits for riders from 90 minutes to 60 minutes, effective April 1.

More details on the decision will follow.
