Thursday night markets on Beacon Street are returning to Sidney this summer, following a successful request for proposals put out by the town in search of a new operator.

Victoria-based Blue Coast Event Group has signed an agreement with the town to operate the market throughout the summer, according to a news release.

The relaunched market will be the first on Beacon Avenue since 2019 as the markets were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous market operator Westcoast Impressions eventually started an alternative market in the Mary Winspear Centre parking lot starting in 2021, and will continue to do so on Thursdays and Sundays this year, meaning residents and visitors will have no shortage of market options in town.

“After hearing from the community, council made it a strategic priority to see the Sidney Street Market return to Beacon Avenue, where it benefits the town culturally, socially and economically,” said Mayor Cliff McNeil-Smith. “It will be a great joy to see the community and visitors of all ages once again experiencing magical summer night markets on Thursdays in our wonderful downtown.”

Blue Coast Event Group said in the release they are excited to have been selected to bring the street market back, and are especially excited to showcase local and regional artisans.

“It is exciting to see the return of the Sidney Street Market on Beacon Avenue, where thousands of people can experience Sidney’s friendly, vibrant and picturesque downtown,” said Morgan Shaw, executive director of Sidney’s Business Improvement Association Society. “Experiences like that make people fall in love with Sidney and want to come back with family and friends.”

The market is set to run June 15 through Sept. 14 every Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. More information, as well as the application form for interested vendors, is available at sidneymarket.ca.
