Police investigate after man found dead in Oak Bay parking lot

Investigation underway at Turkey Head in Oak Bay

Police still don’t believe foul play was involved with a man’s death in the Turkey Head parking lot Feb. 6.

Emergency services responded to a call of a man in distress at 12:30 p.m. that afternoon. Police officers attempted initial live-saving measures and were then replaced by ambulance and fire services upon their arrival. Oak Bay Police Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties said emergency services attempted life-saving measures for some time before ruling the man deceased.

“At this time we have no reason to suspect foul play,” Bernoties said at the scene. “However, until we rule it out we have cordoned off the area. We have detectives at scene, we have forensic identification at scene, and we’re going to investigate this and take it very seriously.”

If the death of the man in his mid-40s is found to not be suspicious, police will pass the file on to the coroner. However, if foul play is determined to have played a role, Bernoties said police would release more information. On Feb. 7 Bernoties said it would be inappropriate to release further information pertaining to the case as it stands now.

The scene was reopened to the public sometime around 5 p.m., on Feb. 6, Bernoties said.

“It’s too early to speculate on cause of death or anything like that, so our primary function right now is to try and determine whether there was any foul play or not,” Bernoties said. “We would really appreciate if anyone on the marina parking lot area saw anything suspicious around lunchtime, if they could get in touch with us, that would be very much appreciated.”

The Oak Bay police are still taking the lead on the investigation. Their non-emergency line is 250-592-2424.
