Woman injured after car crashes down embankment in East Sooke

Incident occurred at about 10:15 a.m. on Gillespie Road

A woman was injured after the car she was driving crashed down a four-foot embankment on Gillespie Road, near Roche Cove bridge, on Thursday morning.

The driver apparently lost control of her vehicle on the winding stretch of road at about 10:15 a.m. as she was driving from East Sooke toward Sooke.

Following the crash, in which the vehicle drove off the roadway, sideswiped a tree and was spun around so that it faced the roadway, the driver witnessed several cars drive by the site, seemingly unaware that a crash had taken place.

“She managed to fish out her phone and call 911,” said East Sooke Fire Chief, Roger Beck.

“At about the same time, a CRD employee noticed the dust cloud that had been kicked up by the crash and stopped to offer assistance.”

Beck confirmed that the vehicle had not rolled over at any time and that the driver and lone occupant of the car had only minor injuries.

“Apparently she had pulled over to answer a call when she went over the embankment. She was actually pretty lucky, the crash could have been a lot worse.”

The woman, visibly shaken, was quickly rescued by firefighters and walked up the embankment on her own to a waiting ambulance.

Sooke and East Sooke fire departments and the B.C. Ambulance Service attended the call.
