North Saanich residents will have a chance to have their say next month on proposed road safety improvements on West Saanich Road in the Deep Cove neighbourhood.

On March 1, the district will be hosting a public engagement session from 6 to 8 p.m. at Deep Cove Elementary School, where residents will be able to learn about the proposed improvements to the road between Clayton and Wain roads, and provide their feedback on the proposed plans to help the district set project priorities.

The proposed plan seeks to balance the needs of businesses in the area and the school by creating safe infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, while also improving driving sight lines and meeting parking needs, according to a news release.

The proposal’s short-term improvements focus on the stretch of West Saanich Road near Deep Cove Market and the Wain Road intersection.

Proposed changes include converting on street parking to parallel parking to improve sight lines, creating continuous pedestrian space in front of Deep Cove Market, improving the crosswalk near the market, adding more parking on Birch Road to compensate for lost parking on West Saanich Road, and improving the Wain Road intersection to reduce traffic speeds, extend sight lines for drivers, and increase safety for pedestrians.

Long-term improvements will be guided by the district’s Active Transportation Plan.
