Free wireless an unintentional secret of Sidney

Town plans to better promote Sidney's free Wi-Fi, web cams

More signs could be just what it takes to let people know Sidney is wireless.

The town plans to put up more visible information to spread the word that downtown is a free wireless hot spot. They plan to put up signs near the highway, on Beacon Avenue and the international ferry terminal to get the message across.

Free wireless coverage has extended from the Mary Winspear Centre to the waterfront at Beacon Avenue since September 2011.

“I believe that the small Town of Sidney having a downtown wireless core augmented by tourist web cams is a major accomplishment that is currently under promoted,” Peter Payerl, manager of information services, wrote in a report.

They’ll also spread the word that four high definition web cams show what’s going on in town through its website, sidney.ca.
