A Central Saanich road remains closed today and possibly Thursday as crews continue to deal with sinkhole that opened up Tuesday.

Britt Burnham, manager of community services for the District of Central Saanich, said late Wednesday morning that the sinkhole in the 7100-block of Veyaness Road near Stellys Cross Road was caused after a stormwater pipe that ran under the road had failed.

“Engineers are on site investigating what led to the failure,” she said.

Burnham said earlier that the road would be closed Wednesday as staff work on the site and depending on how long the repair might take, could be closed Thursday as well.

Central Saanich Police Service Detective Jessica Craig said Tuesday afternoon that two passer-bys first reported the discovery Tuesday mid-afternoon. The incident did not cause any injuries to people or damage to private property.
