There has been a second cougar sighting in the Horth Hill area of North Saanich.

There has been a second cougar sighting in the Horth Hill area of North Saanich.

Sidney North Saanich RCMP responded to a complaint of a cougar in the backyard of a North Saanich resident Aug. 17.

A woman, who lives in the 11000-block of Greenpark Drive, told police she had spotted the cougar in her backyard a few moments before, and it had traveled north towards Larkspur Drive.

When police arrived, they saw the animal move into Green Park, close to Salal Place.

When officers searched the area, they found no sign of the animal. B.C. Conservation officers have been notified of the sighting.

While cougars are rare on the Peninsula, the animal is indigenous to the Island. Police are reminding the public to use the park in groups and to closely watch their young children and pets.

Information on what to do in case of contact with a cougar can be found on the B.C. Ministry of Environment website: www.env.gov.bc.ca/cos/info/wildlife_human_interaction/docs/cougars.html
