Cop kicked in the chest during moving-day madness

Arrest made after suspect also allegedly assaults his 81-year-old mother

A Victoria police officer was allegedly kicked in the chest several times while attempting to arrest an enraged man, who investigators say had just assaulted his 81-year-old mother.

Police were initially called to a break and enter at a residence on Collinson Street at 11:25 a.m. on Dec. 26, which was really a tenant-landlord dispute.

A 48-year-old man had moved in with his mother a few days before, which police say created problems between the senior citizen tenant and her landlord.

While officers oversaw the son moving some of his belongings out of the suite, the man became agitated and, according to a police officer at the scene, pushed his mother over backwards.

The officer attempted to arrest the suspect, but was kicked in the chest. Police say it also took four officers to disarm the man who had grabbed a screwdriver.

The man, who police say has a lengthy record of violence and anti-police behaviour, faces charges of assault, assaulting a peace officer with a weapon and assault with intent to resist arrest.

The 30-year police veteran who was repeatedly kicked did not suffer serious injuries.
